Crowns & Bridges

Crowns

A crown is a dental restoration used to restore teeth that have been chipped, broken, or weakened by decay. Crowns sit over and cover teeth with large fillings when there isn’t much tooth left, and support and protect weak teeth from breaking. They’re a reliable solution for teeth that are discolored or poorly shaped, improving its appearance and position as well as giving it a natural shape.

The Procedure

The tooth that needs restoring is prepared and we will take an x-ray.

A crown is made to fit the tooth precisely and match the teeth around it, then the crown will be fitted securely to allow you to chew and smile with confidence. If you have had root canal treatment you will need a crown to protect or cap the restored tooth, allowing you to eat and bite down on it as if it was a real tooth. Crowns are also used to anchor a bridge or denture firmly in place in the mouth.

Bridges

Dental bridges literally bridge the gap created by missing teeth, restoring appearance and function. The teeth adjacent to the missing space are used as support to which the replacement tooth is attached to. This ‘bridge’ is then cemented into position.

Bridges can be supported by natural teeth or dental implants.

Once you have a bridge fitted, you will have to take extra care of your daily hygiene regime to ensure it stays plaque free and that you can prevent bad breath.

Both crowns and bridges are permanent, which means once they are bonded into place they can’t be taken out of the mouth.
